A devastating fire swept through a furniture market in Ojota, Lagos State, on Thursday, November 7, destroying goods worth millions of naira. The fire, which started at 1 pm, was caused by an electrical surge from a nearby transformer, according to Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
Upon arrival, firefighters found several shops engulfed in flames, leading to the destruction of furniture items worth millions. Fortunately, no lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained. Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service, quickly contained the blaze, preventing further damage.
This incident is the second major fire outbreak in Lagos markets this week, following a similar incident at the Ajah Market near Alesh Bus Stop in Lekki on Sunday night, which also destroyed shops and goods valued in the millions. The recurring challenge of fire outbreaks in Lagos markets highlights the need for increased vigilance and safety measures to prevent such incidents.
The Permanent Secretary narrated, “Upon the arrival of the Tiger Response Team at the incident scene by 1404hrs, it was discovered that several shops used for the production and sale of furniture items were engulfed by fire.
“Investigations conducted by the Lagos Rescue Team LRT revealed that the immediate cause of the inferno was an electricity power surge from the power transformer stationed beside the shops.
“Fortunately, no casualties were recorded at the incident scene and no injuries were sustained due to the incident. However, properties worth a fortune were inferno.”
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service, quickly sprang into action to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading further. Their prompt intervention successfully curtailed the blaze, limiting the damage. The collaborative efforts of these agencies ensured that the situation was brought under control, averting more widespread destruction. By working together, they were able to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings and minimize the overall impact of the incident.
“Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA in collaboration with other stakeholders through concerted efforts successfully curtailed the fire from spreading across multiple areas to cause more damage.
“The agency managed crowd hostilities at the incident scene alongside its primary responsibilities.”
The inferno began around 9 pm and ravaged several shops and stores containing combustible materials.
Fortunately, there were no reported casualties or injuries. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed that properties worth a fortune were destroyed in the blaze.
The agency, along with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, swiftly responded to the incident and successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent buildings. LASEMA's Emergency Response Team from Lekki Base was activated after receiving distress calls, and they arrived at the scene to manage the hostile crowd and extinguish the fire.
