Flick Seeks Turnaround as Barcelona's Winless Run Reaches Three Games
Barcelona's winless streak in LaLiga has reached three games after a 2-1 loss to Las Palmas, piling pressure on coach Hansi Flick.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick expressed his confidence in his players despite the team's 2-1 loss to Las Palmas on Saturday, which extended their winless run in LaLiga to three games. Flick acknowledged, however, that his side is struggling to find cohesion in both attack and defense.
The defeat came as a dampener to Barcelona's 125th anniversary celebrations. The loss allowed Real Madrid to close the gap, with Barcelona now holding a four-point lead over their arch-rivals, who have two games in hand. This shift in momentum puts Real Madrid in the driver's seat, adding pressure on Flick's side to regain their winning form.
“I don't think there is a lack of confidence in the players. Players alone can't win games, it's always about the team. We need to have good connections in defence and in attack, and today we didn't have them,” Flick told reporters.
“I believe in the players. I have confidence in them, but things are as they are. When I started here I told them there would be no excuses.
“It's normal that some players, when they come back from injury, are not at the highest level. But if we play as a team we should be able to beat any team, but if some players are disconnected it doesn't go well.”
“Today it was not possible. In front of goal we were not able to score,” Hansi Flick reflected on Barcelona's disappointing 2-1 loss to Las Palmas. Despite dominating possession and creating scoring opportunities, the Catalan giants were unable to capitalize on their chances.
Raphinha, who scored the equalizer in the second half, echoed Flick's sentiments. The Brazilian winger had a standout performance, hitting the crossbar and seeing a free kick tipped over the bar. Raphinha emphasized the need for Barcelona to turn things around and get back to winning ways.
“We were bad in the game. We have to look at what we are doing wrong to try to improve and win the games," he said. "We have dropped the level of what we were doing and this is making games more difficult for us.
“I don't care about the goal, I cared about the victory. We didn't win and I'm not satisfied with the match. Am I angry? Yes.”
Raphinha also expressed frustration with what he perceived as time-wasting tactics employed by Las Palmas in the second half, as the visitors attempted to protect their lead and secure a notable upset victory.
“I don't want to talk about it because they can use it against me and punish me, but in the second half, only 30 minutes were played instead of the 45 required,” Raphinha said.
“They know what they're doing better than I do.”
