EPL: Crystal Palace Snatch Late Draw Against Newcastle United
A late goal from Daniel Munoz rescued a point for Crystal Palace as they drew 1-1 with Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Crystal Palace secured a dramatic 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at Selhurst Park, thanks to Daniel Munoz's first goal for the Eagles deep into stoppage time. This late equalizer rescued a point for Palace and helped them climb out of the Premier League relegation zone.
Newcastle United faced injury setbacks early in the game, forcing manager Eddie Howe to make adjustments. Top scorer Alexander Isak was replaced by Harvey Barnes at the midpoint of the first half, which impacted the team's dynamics.
The first half was marred by frequent stoppages, disrupting the flow of play and making it challenging for either team to create scoring opportunities. It wasn't until the 30-minute mark that the first shot on goal was attempted, with Trevoh Chalobah's ambitious effort sailing harmlessly over Nick Pope's crossbar.
As the half progressed, Crystal Palace gradually gained the upper hand, becoming the more likely side to score. The Eagles came close to opening the scoring for the fourth time in five games when Ismaïla Sarr delivered a whipped cross that Munoz narrowly missed from just six yards out. Palace had another opportunity when Maxence Lacroix met Eberechi Eze's free-kick with a header, but unfortunately, the Frenchman mistimed his jump, and the ball sailed wide. As a result, Palace went into the break goalless, marking their sixth scoreless first half in seven home matches this season.
The first half was a lackluster affair, with neither Crystal Palace nor Newcastle United able to register a shot on target. As a result, the contest was still very much up for grabs, with both teams having the opportunity to seize the initiative in the second half.
However, it was Newcastle United who emerged from the halftime break with renewed purpose, inspired by manager Eddie Howe's team talk. The visitors quickly made their mark, scoring shortly after the restart. Anthony Gordon delivered a low, whipped cross into the Palace box, which was inadvertently flicked into the net by Marc Guéhi, giving Newcastle the lead.
Newcastle United's goal seemed to set them up for a promising outcome, as they had won all three previous matches this season where they scored the opening goal. The visitors initially withstood Crystal Palace's response, with Dan Burn making a crucial intervention by sliding in to block Munoz's goal-bound shot.
However, just as it appeared that Newcastle would comfortably hold onto their lead, a late lapse in concentration proved costly. Munoz, who had missed a scoring opportunity in the first half, made amends by leveling the contest in the fourth minute of stoppage time. His downward header bounced over Nick Pope and into the net, marking Munoz's first Premier League goal and rescuing a potentially crucial point for Crystal Palace. This result means that Palace has now lost just once in their last six matches.
