Chizitere Obioha's UTME Ordeal: Invigilator Denies Wrongdoing, Points to Resident Monitor

Chizitere Obioha, a 16-year-old student, has made a shocking allegation against an invigilator, Mutiu Olayemi, who requested her phone number during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). When she declined, her result was withheld, sparking claims of retaliation.

Chizitere's father, Onyebuchi Obioha, has taken swift action by petitioning the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, seeking intervention for his daughter. The committee, tasked with addressing public grievances, received the petition and presented it on the Senate floor on October 8, courtesy of Chairman Neda Imasuen.

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions plays a vital role in providing a platform for citizens to air their grievances and seek redress. As outlined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Section 88(1), this committee has the authority to investigate and address public petitions.

Key Facts:

  • Petitioner: Onyebuchi Obioha (Chizitere's father)
  • Invigilator: Mutiu Olayemi
  • Incident: Request for phone number, result withholding
  • Committee: Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions
  • Presentation Date: Tuesday, October 8

Senator Imasuen, representing Edo South, revealed that the invigilator attempted to befriend Chizitere Obioha during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), but she rejected his advances. Consequently, her result was withheld due to allegations of examination malpractice.

Chizitere's father, Mr. Obioha, petitioned the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, stating that his daughter took the UTME at Wisdom House Computer-Based Test Centre in Ogba, Lagos, on April 22nd. After the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) released the results, Chizitere's score was withheld, with JAMB claiming she engaged in examination malpractice.

Key Events:

  • Incident Details: Chizitere Obioha, a 16-year-old UTME candidate, alleged sexual harassment by an invigilator during the exam.
  • Exam Center: Wisdom House Computer-Based Test Centre, Ogba, Lagos.
  • Date of Exam: April 22nd.
  • Result Status: Withheld due to alleged examination malpractice.
  • Petition: Filed by Chizitere's father, Mr. Obioha, with the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

Mr. Onyebuchi Obioha, Chizitere's father, expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of his daughter's Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) result. Despite his complaints, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) upheld the decision, citing the invigilators' report that Chizitere engaged in examination malpractice.

Obioha vehemently denied these allegations, attributing the withheld result to his daughter's rejection of the invigilator's sexual advances. He revealed that after the examination, the invigilator gave Chizitere a piece of paper with his phone number and a note saying, “I want you to call me.”

“I want to bring to your notice a suspicion that we have relating to this case,” Mr. Obioha stated. “We are very certain that our daughter is being punished for a crime she did not commit.” He emphasized that Chizitere's integrity and reputation were being unfairly tarnished.

“When my daughter came out of the hall on that fateful exam day being the 22nd of April 2024, after she told me that the examination was good, she then handed a tiny piece of paper to me and said that a man in the hall gave it to her to call him after the exam.

“In her exact words, he came around and looked at her name and said that her name was a beautiful name..

“He then left and came back almost when she was rounding up and dropped this piece of paper and asked her to call him afterwards. She decided to bring the paper to me,” the petition reads.

Mr. Onyebuchi Obioha, Chizitere's father, provided additional context to the incident, stating that he confiscated the paper with the invigilator's phone number from his daughter. He then contacted the invigilator, sternly warning him to leave Chizitere alone.

Furthermore, Obioha revealed that Chizitere's mother also reached out to the invigilator via phone call, reiterating the warning to stay away from their daughter. This proactive measure demonstrated the family's commitment to protecting Chizitere from potential harm.

“I called the number immediately and asked him why he gave a little girl of 16 years his number to call him.

“He immediately denied it and said that it was a wrong number. I checked the paper and told him that it was his number that he wrote that I called.

“He cut the line. When we got home, my daughter also told my wife who also placed a call to him and he denied again and also cut the line.

“I then sent a WhatsApp message the same day in the evening to him asking him to desist from this and should apologise.

“He did not respond. I have that message. I have also attached it here. The number is 08067366564. I checked Truecaller and the name that popped up was Mutiu Olayemi.”

Mutiu Olayemi, the accused invigilator, refuted allegations of giving Chizitere his phone number during the examination, denying any wrongdoing.

As the supervisor at the examination centre, Olayemi acknowledged his presence but categorically denied distributing his contact information to any candidates, contradicting Chizitere's claims.

“I didn't toast anybody during the examination or give my phone number to any candidate.

“I'm already in Abuja as directed by JAMB Abuja to defend myself,” he said.

Mutiu Olayemi, the accused invigilator, has denied any involvement in writing the report that led to Chizitere Obioha's examination malpractice allegation. He claims it was actually the Resident Monitor who filed the report against her. Olayemi has maintained his innocence, stating that he didn't engage in any inappropriate behavior or share his phone number with any candidates during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

In fact, Olayemi emphasized that he's already in Abuja to defend himself as directed by JAMB, reiterating that he didn't write the report. This development raises questions about the authenticity of the allegations and the potential motives behind the Resident Monitor's report. Chizitere's father, Onyebuchi Obioha, has been vocal about his daughter's innocence, attributing the withheld result to Olayemi's retaliation for Chizitere's rejection of his sexual advances. The case remains contentious, with multiple parties involved and conflicting accounts.
