NDLEA-UK Partnership Yields Results: Donated Facilities Enhance Nigeria's Capacity to Combat Illicit Drug Trafficking
The UK government's Home Office International Operations (HOIO) has made significant strides in combating substance abuse and illegal drug trafficking in partnership with Nigeria. According to Victoria Pullen, head of HOIO, this collaboration has yielded positive outcomes. Pullen made this announcement during a visit to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, where she was accompanied by colleague Kristoffer Hawksfield.
Their visit aimed to formalize a renewed memorandum of understanding between the Home Office and the NDLEA, strengthening their joint efforts. The partnership's success is evident in the recent streak of successes recorded by the NDLEA, as noted by Pullen.
The HOIO's work is part of the UK government's broader efforts to prevent illegal immigration and disrupt organized crime groups. Their operations involve:
Disrupting Illegal Migration: Identifying and disrupting organized crime groups involved in human trafficking and illegal migration.
Intelligence Gathering: Collecting and analyzing information to support investigations and prosecutions.
International Collaboration: Working with global partners to share intelligence and best practices.
By leveraging these strategies, the HOIO and NDLEA can continue to make progress in combating substance abuse and illegal drug trafficking.
Victoria Pullen, head of the UK's Home Office International Operations, expressed heartfelt thanks to Chairman Mohammed Buba Marwa of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for their exceptional collaboration. Marwa, a renowned figure with a distinguished military and administrative background, has been leading the NDLEA since January 2021. His leadership and cooperation have been instrumental in fostering a strong partnership between the UK and Nigeria in combating substance abuse and illegal drug trafficking.
“I think it's evident from some of the recent successes and the volume of some of the illicit commodities that your teams are finding.
“That cooperation is working exceptionally well currently and we a currently really enjoying working witg your team on those successes.
“The willingness of your teams to work with us and do things differently and try things differently, which fortunately is leading to those successes and we like the way that you've worked with the UK and the levels of engagement that we've enjoyed with the teams.”
Victoria Pullen acknowledged the strengthened partnership between NDLEA and HOIO, highlighting the inauguration of the NDLEA Marine Command Headquarters in Lagos on October 16. This facility, constructed and donated by the UK government, marks a significant milestone in their collaboration.
“This investment will yield substantial benefits for Nigeria,” Pullen noted. “By bolstering NDLEA's capabilities, we can prevent drugs from entering your community, promoting a safer society.”
“Also, in the global space because the more that we help you to interdict and take out of the system here, the less that's going into countries around the world and into society.
“Our team has got nothing but very positive things to say about the relationship that we have with you and your teams.
“We look forward to the future, building on those and making them a lot better,” she added.
Chairman Mohammed Buba Marwa of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the UK government for its unwavering support in Nigeria's quest to combat illicit drug trafficking. Specifically, Marwa commended the UK's generous donation of a state-of-the-art Marine Headquarters facility, which significantly bolsters the Agency's operational capabilities. This strategic partnership has yielded tangible results, with the NDLEA recording a streak of successes in recent times.
Areas of UK Support:
Marine Headquarters Facility: A donated facility enhancing NDLEA's maritime operations
MMIA Command Operational Facility: Another donated facility in Ikeja, Lagos, boosting NDLEA's presence in key airports
Capacity Building: UK's assistance enables NDLEA to tackle drug trafficking more effectively
By strengthening collaboration and sharing expertise, the UK and Nigeria are making significant strides in disrupting organized crime groups and promoting regional security.
