UI students displaced as flood inundates Awo Hostel and other residences, causing widespread destruction.




A devastating flood swept through the University of Ibadan (UI) in Oyo State on Friday, October 4, 2024, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The disaster severely impacted several hostels, damaging essential resources such as books, food supplies, and vital documents.


The flood's aftermath revealed the extent of the damage, with important documents and valuables destroyed. University authorities launched an investigation on Saturday, October 5, confirming that multiple hostels were submerged, resulting in significant property loss.


Some of the affected hostels include:

Mellanby Hall: Known for its lively atmosphere and neat environment 

Tedder Hall: Famous for its gentle and nice residents 

Kuti Hall: Popular for its spoiled “ajebutter” children

Queen Elizabeth II Hall: A large undergraduate female hall with shared rooms

Queen Idia Hall: A vibrant community with access to various facilities

An eyewitness and student of the university, who preferred to remain nameless, shared: “The most affected hall of residence is Awo Hostel, where about 16 rooms on the underground floor were completely submerged, with students' property floating on the water.”


Another student said, “students foodstufis, documents and property, especially those that went for examinations were destroyed.


“The flood took over students' rooms, toilets, kitchens and all the entrances to their hostel.


“The flood took over my friend's room and destroyed everything she has, including the ones in her cupboard,” addeded anothwr student.
