Lagos Police Command cracks down on misconduct: 4 officers apprehended for extorting NYSC members. Read the full story & learn about measures to ensure accountability.

Four Lagos State policemen are in hot water after a video surfaced of them allegedly extorting N1 million from National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. The Lagos State Police Command has summoned the officers to explain their involvement in the incident.

The drama unfolded when the policemen stopped the corps members' vehicle and demanded the driver's license, which wasn't available in hard copy. The officers then allegedly threatened the corps members, taking them to a location where they were forced to cough up N1 million.

This isn't the first time Lagos policemen have been accused of extortion. In a similar incident, a barber claimed four policemen extorted N100,000 from him, allegedly accusing him of fraud and threatening to take him to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The Lagos Police Command has taken steps to address such incidents, dismissing some officers involved in extortion and promising to rid the force of “bad eggs.”

Lagos police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, announced on Friday that the four police officers accused of extorting N1 million from National Youth Service Corps members have been apprehended. This update comes after a video surfaced showing the officers demanding the driver's license of one of the corps members, who didn't have a hard copy, and allegedly threatening them before taking them to a location to extract the money.

Benjamin Hundeyin, a seasoned police superintendent and Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, has been proactive in addressing police misconduct. With his background in Legal Criminology and Security Psychology from the University of Ibadan, Hundeyin brings a unique perspective to policing.

“Your officers today in Surulere extorted 1 million naira from 3 corps members. They were threatened with firearms, kidnapped, and taken to the KAFARU OLUWOLE TINUBU HOUSE AREA C POLICE COMMAND of the @Lagos PoliceNG where they were robbed,” the poster claimed on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Their offence was the absence of a physical copy of a driver's license. This is evil!”

In related news, Hundeyin recently confirmed that nine suspected kidnappers were killed.
