Burna Boy Speed Darlington Controversy: Nigeria Police Arrest, Cyberstalking Allegations

Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has denied claims that Burna Boy was behind Speed Darlington's arrest. Speed Darlington, whose real name is Darlington Okoye, was taken into custody following a petition from Burna Boy alleging cyberstalking.

After being initially apprehended in Lagos, Speed Darlington was moved between various police units in the state before being transferred to Abuja. There, the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) detained him in connection with the cyberstalking allegations.

Facts:

Arrest: Speed Darlington was arrested and detained following a petition from Burna Boy.

Allegations: Burna Boy accused Speed Darlington of cyberstalking.

Transfer: Speed Darlington was transferred from Lagos to Abuja.

Detention: The Intelligence Response Team (IRT) detained Speed Darlington in Abuja.

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju recently revealed that he's reviewed the petition Burna Boy filed against Speed Darlington, which led to Darlington's arrest. Apparently, Darlington was detained for five days before being released. However, Burna Boy faced major backlash on social media for allegedly being behind Darlington's arrest.

From what I gathered, the arrest was linked to a video where Speed Darlington made some suggestive comments about Burna Boy's relationship with Sean “Diddy” Combs, following Diddy's arrest on sex trafficking charges. Burna Boy reportedly accused Darlington of cyberbullying in his petition.

The whole ordeal has sparked quite the controversy, with many people questioning Burna Boy's motives and criticizing his actions. Despite Darlington's release, the incident has left a stain on Burna Boy's reputation, with fans and fellow artists alike weighing in on social media.

Martins Vincent Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, a social media activist, slammed the situation in an Instagram video on October 9. He accused the police of being used as a tool for oppression.

On October 12, police spokesperson Josephine Adeh issued a statement clarifying that no individual can direct the police to make arrests. She emphasized that arrests follow thorough investigations, not personal requests or demands.

Adeh stressed that police officers prioritize evidence and due process, ensuring that arrests are made only when warranted.

Adeh said; “Hey influencers, Bloggers, and Vloggers, Let's set the record straight! No one-yes, NO ONE- can just ‘order’ the police to make an arrest. The Police act on real investigations, not personal vendettas.

“If you're in hot water, cooperate, avail yourself and tell your side of the story. Ignoring it could land you in serious trouble, no matter who you think you are. Stop spreading misinformation. Let's be guided.” she added.

Background Story

Controversy surrounds the disappearance of singer Speed Darlington, with his mother, Queen, accusing Burna Boy and his team of involvement. Speed Darlington went missing on Sunday, and his mother alleged that Burna Boy orchestrated his arrest due to a social media post.

On Wednesday, Burna Boy sparked speculation with a cryptic tweet, “Who's missing?” Many linked this to Speed Darlington's disappearance. However, Queen clarified that her son's arrest stemmed from a video criticizing Burna Boy's association with Diddy, arrested by the FBI on multiple charges.

In the video, Speed Darlington allegedly mocked Burna Boy's Grammy win for “Twice As Tall,” produced by Diddy, questioning the legitimacy of the award. Queen confirmed that her son's gateman linked the arrest to the video.

Queen appealed to Nigerians and Speed Darlington's fans to intervene, urging Burna Boy to release her son. The situation has sparked public debate, highlighting tensions between the two artists.

Appealing

“Please, Burna Boy, Speed Darlington is my only son; I’m begging you Nigerians to help me beg Burna Boy. Burna Boy, I’m on my knees begging you, tampered justice with mercy. Have mercy on my son. Forgive him, please. Nigerians, please come to Speed Darlington’s aid; his fans should help me to beg Burna Boy.

“I don’t know what to say again other than to beg because I’m a mother, grandmother. I’m just asking for forgiveness; I’m just begging you to release my son. I have nothing to say other than begging Burna Boy. May this beg to touch Burna Boy’s heart? I’m not in Nigeria currently, so please release my son. I know you (Burna Boy) will listen to me. Thank you,” she added.

Speed Darlington's Case

However, Deji Adeyanju, a legal practitioner, revealed on his X page Tuesday (8th) afternoon that Speed Darlington's arrest resulted from a petition filed by Burna Boy. According to Adeyanju, the singer was arrested in Lagos on Friday and subsequently transferred to Abuja, where he is currently being held in detention.

He tweeted: “We just spent the last 30mins with Speed Darlington, and he narrated how he was arrested in Lagos Friday last week, moved around, eventually brought to Abuja and has been in detention since then. Burna Boy wrote the petition against him, we can confirm.

“We have just located Speed Darlington and are working on getting him freed. The attack on freedom of expression in Nigeria must stop.”
