Shari'a Court to Probe Jigawa Commissioner's Alleged Infidelity with Married Woman

A high-profile adultery case is set to begin in Kano Upper Shari'a Court 1, Kofar Kudu, today, October 22. The case involves suspended Jigawa State Commissioner for Special Duties Auwal Danladi Sankara and Tasleem Baba Nabegu, who is allegedly having an illicit affair with him. Tasleem's husband, Alhaji Nasiru Buba, filed the complaint, accusing Sankara and his wife of engaging in adultery, which is prohibited under Islamic law.

Ustaz Ibrahim Sarki Yola will preside over the hearing. The complainant, Alhaji Nasiru Buba, has two children with Tasleem, making this case particularly personal and sensitive. The court's decision will be closely watched, given the high-profile nature of the case and its implications for Islamic law in Nigeria.

Case Details:

  • Parties Involved: Auwal Danladi Sankara, Tasleem Baba Nabegu, and Alhaji Nasiru Buba
  • Court: Kano Upper Shari'a Court 1, Kofar Kudu
  • Presiding Judge: Ustaz Ibrahim Sarki Yola
  • Date of Hearing: October 22

The Kano State Hisbah Board announced the arrest of Auwal Sankara and a married woman at his uncompleted building in Lamido Crescent, Nassarawa GRA, Kano metropolis, last Thursday, October 17. This development led Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi to suspend the embattled commissioner and establish a five-member panel to investigate the matter, which has become a source of embarrassment for the state.

On Monday, October 21, the court registrar informed the parties involved that the case would be heard the following day, Tuesday, October 22. This update indicates that the legal proceedings are moving forward, and the parties are preparing for the next steps in the case.

Barrister Haruna Magashi, representing Barrister Sa'idu Muhammad Tudu Wada, spoke to reporters on behalf of the complainant. He stated, “Our client is urging the court to investigate the relationship between his wife and the defendant over the alleged commission of crime for criminal prosecution or whatsoever.” This request seeks clarity on potential wrongdoing.

Counsel for Danladi Sankara, Barrister Shehu Sadam Suleiman, responded, expressing surprise at reports of his client's arrest by the Kano State Hisbah Board. Suleiman emphasized that his client was unaware of the allegations until reading them on social media and electronic media, specifically regarding an alleged illicit affair with Tasleem Baba Nabegu, the wife of complainant Nasiru Buba.

“It is important for journalists and the public to note that this is a matter of direct criminal complaint against our client, not a matter instituted by Kano State Hisbah Board as per the records of the court and what we know.

“This is a direct criminal complaint against our client and the complainant's wife,” said Suleiman.

My client is committed to defending his reputation and will present a robust defense in court.
