Lamine Yamal, Barcelona's teenage sensation, shone bright at the 2024 Ballon d'Or gala in Paris, claiming the Kopa Trophy as the world's best Under-21 player.
Spain dominated the top honors, with Rodri securing the coveted Ballon d'Or, while Aitana Bonmati retained the Ballon d'Or Feminin. However, Luis de la Fuente surprisingly missed out on the coaching award.
Real Madrid and Barcelona shared club honors, but the night belonged to Spanish talent. Lamine Yamal's Kopa Trophy win highlighted his rapid rise to stardom.
Rodri took home the Ballon d'Or, edging out Real Madrid trio Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, and Dani Carvajal. This triumph solidified his status as the world's best men's footballer.
Aitana Bonmati of Barcelona and Spain successfully defended her title as the world's best women's player, while Luis de la Fuente missed out on the coaching award to Carlo Ancelotti.
Rodri, Manchester City's midfield anchor, was crucial to Spain's European Championship triumph. However, Lamine Yamal stole the show with his breathtaking performances.
Yamal, just 16 for most of Euro 2024, burst onto the scene with a stunning equalizer against France in the semis and 4 assists throughout the tournament, helping Spain claim the title.
At club level, Yamal contributed 16 goals in 50 games for Barcelona in 2023/24. This season, he has already made 13 goal contributions, setting the stage for another impressive year.
Lamine Yamal edged out stiff competition, including Barcelona teammate Pau Cubarsi, Real Madrid's Arda Guler, and Manchester United duo Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, to claim the Kopa Trophy.
Yamal became the sixth Kopa Trophy recipient, joining an illustrious group: Kylian Mbappé, Matthijs de Ligt, Pedri, Gavi, and Jude Bellingham.
The 17-year-old wonderkid, who also ranked eighth in the senior Ballon d'Or voting, received the Kopa Trophy from 1987 Ballon d'Or winner Ruud Gullit in Paris.
Carlo Ancelotti and Emma Hayes took home the coaching honors at the 2024 Ballon d'Or awards.
Ancelotti, absent from the ceremony alongside his Real Madrid team, secured the Men's Coach of the Year award, capping off a remarkable season with UEFA Champions League and La Liga titles.
Ceremony host Didier Drogba expressed disappointment at Ancelotti's absence, saying, “I'm disappointed not to see my former coach tonight.”
Emma Hayes also missed the ceremony but claimed the Women's Coach of the Year award, thanks to her impressive farewell season at Chelsea, where she won a fifth consecutive Women's Super League title.
Hayes' Olympic Games triumph with the USA came too late to be considered for this award but solidified her legendary status.
Barcelona's dominance in women's football earned them the Women's Club of the Year award, capping off a remarkable 2023/24 season.
The Catalan giants secured an impressive quadruple, winning Liga F, UEFA Women's Champions League, Copa de la Reina, and Supercopa.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta expressed pride, saying, “We're honored. Thanks to everyone at the club, especially the players, for making Barcelona the best women's team globally.”
Meanwhile, Real Madrid claimed the Men's Club of the Year award, fueled by their La Liga and Champions League triumphs under Carlo Ancelotti.
Host Didier Drogba congratulated Real Madrid, but the team was notably absent from the Paris gala amidst reports they would boycott after Vinicius Junior missed the Ballon d'Or.
The Gerd Muller Trophy, awarded to the top goalscorer across all competitions for club and country, was shared by Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé, who both scored 52 goals.
However, only Kane attended the ceremony due to Real Madrid's boycott, and he expressed gratitude upon receiving the award.
“Thank you to my club, FC Bayern Munich, to all my staff, all my teammates who helped me achieve the goals I scored last season,Kane said. “It's an honor to take this award from a club legend like Gerd Muller.”
Kane reflected on his journey, “It was a new chapter for me. Going to Germany, taking my family with me, I didn't know what to expect. Credit to the people around me. I went with the ride. It's been a good year and a bit - hopefully many more to come.”
Host Didier Drogba asked Kane about areas for improvement, and the former Tottenham Hotspur star replied, “Good question. Maybe my speed. But maybe my age won't help me with that one!”
Emiliano Martinez retained the Lev Yashin Trophy as the world's best goalkeeper for the second consecutive year.
Martinez, who won the 2024 Copa America with Argentina, edged out Unai Simon, Mike Maignan, Andriy Lunin, and Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper received his award from Internazionale striker and Argentina teammate Lautaro Martinez.
On his triumph, Martinez humbly stated, “I don't see myself as the best. There's so many good goalies I see today.”
Martinez addressed his penalty-saving expertise and mind games, saying, ”When you're on the pitch, you behave the way you want to win the game.”
He differentiated his on-pitch persona from his personal life, “Off the pitch, I'm a husband, a brother, a son. On the pitch, I want to do everything I can to help my national team and my club.”
Martinez expressed pride in Aston Villa's progress, “At Aston Villa, we're doing something amazing... moving forward. We won back-to-back trophies with the national team. That's all I care, to be fair.”
