EFCC denies holding Yahaya Bello amid arrest warrant.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello is not in their custody, contrary to recent media reports. In a statement issued today, September 18, by the Commission's spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC reaffirmed that Bello remains wanted with a subsisting warrant of arrest. This announcement comes amidst allegations of money laundering against Bello, with the EFCC arraigning him on 19-count charges bordering on laundering N80.2 billion.
Background on the Allegations
Bello's arraignment stems from a warrant of arrest and enrolment order granted by the Federal High Court on April 17, 2024. The EFCC had attempted to execute the warrant but faced resistance from the current Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, who ensured Bello's safe exit in his official vehicle.
EFCC's Stance
The EFCC emphasizes that Bello is not above the law and will be brought to justice soon. The commission's prosecution counsel, Kemi Piniero (SAN), stresses that Bello's presence is required in court for his arraignment, as the trial cannot proceed without him.
Trial Updates
The trial has seen the EFCC file amended 17-count charges against Bello and others, including his nephew Ali Bello, Dauda Sulaiman, and Abdulsalam Hudu. The charges include money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds totaling N84 billion.
“The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody.
“Bello, already declared wanted by the Commission for alleged N80.2billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.”
The EFCC's statement was released to address rumors that Bello was being held in their facilities. However, Oyewale confirmed that Bello is still at large and has yet to face justice for the alleged financial crime. The Commission's clarification aims to set the record straight and reassure the public that Bello's case is still ongoing.
