President Bola Tinubu Cancels UN Trip

Vice President Shettima to Represent Nigeria at UNGA as Tinubu addresses domestic issues.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has made the decision to cancel his trip to the United Nations General Assembly, opting instead to focus on pressing national issues. This move comes as a surprise, especially since Tinubu was scheduled to address world leaders at the 78th Session of the high-level General Debate of the UN General Assembly today, September 19.
As the fifth African leader to speak on day one of the gathering, Tinubu's address was highly anticipated. However, with national issues taking precedence, the President has chosen to prioritize domestic concerns.
President Bola Tinubu won't be attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York this year. Instead, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria's delegation to the global summit. This decision comes as no surprise, given the recent severe flooding in the country, which has necessitated the President's attention on pressing domestic issues.
The President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced this decision on Thursday, September 19. With the country still reeling from the devastating floods that killed over 612 people and displaced millions last year, President Tinubu's focus on domestic issues is crucial. The floods have also had a significant impact on the economy, destroying farmlands and infrastructure, and affecting food security.
Domestic Priorities:
Flooding: Addressing the immediate needs of affected communities and implementing measures to prevent future disasters.
Economy: Supporting farmers and businesses impacted by the floods and promoting economic growth.
Security: Ensuring the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.
The statement, titled “Vice President Shettima to Lead Nigeria's Delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly,” highlighted the president's decision to prioritize addressing the nation's current challenges.
It read, “President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this year.
“Therefore, the President has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria's delegation.”
By staying in Nigeria, President Tinubu can oversee the response to these challenges and work towards finding lasting solutions. Vice President Shettima's presence at the UNGA will ensure Nigeria's interests are represented on the global stage.
The high-level General Debate, themed “Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations,” is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, September 24, to Saturday, September 28, 2024.
