NNPCL Hikes Fuel Price Amid $8 Billion Debt. Depot operators confirm N250 added to pump price, with petrol now selling at N860 per litre. Federal Government denies N1000 per litre claim.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has implemented a significant price hike, just days after revealing an $8 billion debt hindered fuel imports. However, NNPCL spokesperson Olufemi Soneye has refused to comment on the development.
Depot operators have confirmed that N250 has been added to the pump price, with some major marketers now selling petrol at N860 per litre.
The Federal Government has denied reports that it instructed the NNPCL to increase petrol prices to N1000 per litre. A viral claim alleged that Minister of State for Oil and Gas, Hon. Heineken Lokpobiri, directed the NNPCL to raise fuel prices above the current rate.
Nnemaka Okafor, a spokesperson for the Minister of State for Oil and Gas, debunked the report as false in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 2.
“The Federal Government is compelled to address the outright falsehoods currently being circulated on social media, which claim that the Honourable Minister for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has directed the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to inflate petroleum prices above the approved pump price.
“We categorically condemn these claims as baseless, malicious, and a deliberate attempt to incite public discontent,” the statement read in part.
