Locals Protest, Demand Justice: Locals in Assam's Chirang district stage demonstration, seeking harsh penalties for accused in alleged gang-rape case.

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by six youngsters, including two minors, in Assam's Chirang district. The perpetrators recorded the crime and shared it on a WhatsApp group to blackmail her.

Assam police confirmed the incident on Wednesday, September 4, stating that five of the six accused have been arrested following a complaint lodged by the girl's family.

The alleged gang-rape occurred in August in Chirang's Bengtol area, near the Indo-Bhutan border. However, the girl's family members delayed filing a complaint as she was too afraid to reveal the incident, having been threatened by the accused.

“She is young and was traumatized by the threats. The boys tried to create pressure on her further when she revealed this to us,” said a family member.

A compromising video was recently shared on a WhatsApp group, sparking an investigation into an alleged blackmail attempt. Police suspect the accused were using the video to coerce the 16-year-old victim.

Most of the accused, reportedly in their early 20s, hail from the same village as the victim, according to authorities. Their proximity to the victim raises concerns about the potential for further harassment or intimidation.

“We have arrested five of the six accused, and one person is still absconding.

“Two of them are claiming that they are minors, but we are examining their birth certificates,” said Chirang superintendent of police (SP).

A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the alleged gang-rape.

Investigating officers have collected evidence and recorded statements from the 16-year-old victim and her family members, taking steps to build a strong case against the accused.

“We are also interrogating the arrested persons, and further investigation is going on,” said an officer.

Locals staged a protest, calling for severe punishment for the accused in the alleged gang-rape case.

“This is a serious matter, the culprits not only committed the crime but attempted to continue this further by recording a video.

“This has to be investigated properly, and strict action should be taken,” said a villager.
