Guinness World Records has announced that since Awal exceeded 24 hours...

Ghanaian journalist Abdul Hakim Awal breaks Guinness World Record for longest tree hug, lasting 24 hours and 21 minutes, to promote reforestation and nature conservation.

Abdul Hakim Awal, a 23-year-old journalist from Kumasi, Ghana, has achieved a remarkable feat by breaking the world record for the longest tree hug. His endurance challenge took place outside the Kumasi Cultural Centre.

Awal's tree-hug-a-thon lasted an impressive 24 hours and 21 minutes, surpassing the previous record. To accomplish this, he was not allowed any breaks and had to maintain his stance, wrapping his arms around the tree for the entire duration.

Speaking about the achievement, Awal said his goal is to “promote reforestation and nature conservation in Ghana.

“We know how trees, an essential resource which the entire human race depends on, are becoming scarce in Ghana,” he said.

“Though we have been taught about preservation of trees since the early years of our lives, the contribution from everyone is not as significant as it should be.

“This attempt for the longest time to hug a tree, to me, spells out an important task to preserve human life by preserving trees.”

Awal surpassed the previous record of 16 hours set by Ugandan environmental activist earlier this year, she is the first record holder.

Guinness World Records (GWR) revealed that now that the record has exceed 24 hours, the title has changed to longest marathon hugging a tree.

The next person to attempt it will also be given two hours break per day.

To commemorate his record-breaking achievement, Awal has pledged to plant a new tree for every minute he spent hugging the tree. With a total of 1,461 minutes, Awal is now committed to planting 1,461 trees.

Awal's remarkable endurance surpassed the previous record of 16 hours set by a Ugandan environmental activist earlier this year. The activist was the inaugural record holder, and Awal has significantly extended the record.

Guinness World Records has announced that since Awal exceeded 24 hours, the title has been revised to “longest marathon hugging a tree.” For future attempts, participants will be allowed two hours of break per day, making the challenge slightly more manageable.
