Kamala Harris clinches democratic nomination...

Kamala Harris makes history as the first woman of color to lead a major party's presidential ticket, securing the Democratic nomination. She'll face Donald Trump in the November election.

Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison announced on Friday that Kamala Harris has secured the necessary votes from delegates to become the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.

The announcement comes ahead of the online voting process's scheduled conclusion on Monday, as the party seeks to build on the momentum generated by President Joe Biden's recent decision to end his reelection campaign and endorse Harris as his successor just under two weeks ago.

Kamala Harris, who traces her roots to Jamaica and India through her father and mother respectively, has made history by becoming the first woman of colour to lead a major party's presidential ticket. In a call with supporters, she expressed her gratitude, saying she is “honoured to be the presumptive Democratic nominee.”

“It's not going to be easy. But we're going to get this done,” she added. “As your future president, I know we are up to this fight.”

Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison vowed that the party will unite behind Vice President Kamala Harris, showcasing their strength at the upcoming convention in Chicago later this month.

During a virtual event, the Democratic National Committee refrained from disclosing the delegate vote count, including the total number or state-by-state breakdowns. With no other candidates contesting the nomination, Harris' victory was all but certain, and campaign officials closely monitored the delegate-counting process. Following President Biden's endorsement, Harris quickly garnered widespread support from Democrats, solidifying her position as the presumptive nominee.

Although the outcome is already certain, the Democratic Party will still conduct a traditional state-by-state roll call during their convention, a ceremonial gesture that formally confirms the nominee.

Vice President Kamala Harris, 59, is set to face off against 78-year-old former President Donald Trump, the Republican Party's nominee, in the November election. This highly anticipated contest will mark a historic moment, as Harris becomes the first woman of color to lead a major party's presidential ticket.
