Nigerian youths protest against economic hardship and poor governance, targeting lawmakers' properties and looting facilities. Authorities condemn vandalism and theft, promising investigations and increased security.

On August 6, a group of Nigerian youths took drastic action by setting fire to a mansion belonging to Nazifi Sani Gumel, a member of the House of Representatives for the Gumel/Maigatari/Sule Tankarkar/Gagarawa Federal Constituency. This incident occurred amidst escalating nationwide protests against economic hardship and poor governance.

The youths targeted Gumel's property, accusing him of neglecting his constituency 14 months after his election in the last general polls. This act of vandalism highlights the growing frustration among Nigerian youths towards political leaders perceived as abandoning their constituents.

In a similar incident in Yobe State, a group of angry youths attacked the residence of a serving Senator, alleging embezzlement of public funds meant for district development. This surge in attacks on political leaders' properties underscores the increasing discontent among Nigerians, particularly youths, towards perceived corruption and neglect by those in power.

The administration of President Bola Tinubu has disclosed that approximately 150 brand-new computers and laptops were stolen from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Industrial Park in Kano, which was recently vandalized. The facility, a newly constructed complex, was attacked by individuals disguising themselves as protesters on Thursday, August 1.

The incident has raised concerns about the true intentions of those responsible, as the destruction and looting of public property continue to plague the country. The theft of valuable equipment, meant to support the NCC's operations, is a significant setback for the organization and the community it serves. An investigation into the incident is likely to follow, aiming to identify the perpetrators and hold them accountable for their actions.

A group of hoodlums took advantage of the chaos to loot several properties, but their actions were thwarted by a separate group of protesters who intervened to restore order. The peacekeepers, identifiable by their green caps with the word “peace” printed on them, chased away the perpetrators and helped to prevent further destruction.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing numerous individuals fleeing the scene with stolen goods, including furniture, electronics, and equipment from the NCC office. The looters had made off with a significant amount of valuable property, leaving the facility in disarray.

In a statement released late on Thursday, August 1, the Minister of Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, condemned the incident, revealing that the NCC facility had been completely vandalized by the miscreants. The minister's comments highlighted the severity of the damage and the need for swift action to address the situation.

“In fact, what was missing was the generator needed, a few more works and also the power backup that needed to be in the space before we could start using the computers.

“That was the last thing the contractor supplied and we meant to do put it in use. But this is part of what you get with protest.

“The last report I got was actually from an aide to the governor who is the gentleman that we have been working with on the official launch next week.

“And he had to reach out and say they may need more security officers to help.”
