Atiku, Sanwo-Olu Slam Divisive 'IgboMustGo' Movement
Atiku, Sanwo-Olu condemn ‘IgboMustGo’ hate campaign...
Atiku Abubakar and Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu condemn divisive #IgboMustGo hashtag, urging swift action against instigators and promoting unity and inclusivity in Nigeria.
Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party, has urged the Federal Government to investigate and take swift action against those responsible for promoting the inflammatory hashtag #IgboMustGo on social media.
In a post on his official Facebook page on Thursday, August 1, the former Vice President condemned the hashtag as divisive and a menace to peace and security, emphasizing the need for prompt action to address this threat to national harmony.
“The recent call on X (formerly Twitter) for a protest under the hashtag #Igbo MustGo, demanding the forced relocation of Igbo people from Lagos and other South-West states, is deeply troubling and fundamentally opposed to the principles of unity and coexistence that define our nation. Such rhetoric is not only divisive but also endangers our peace and security, as our Constitution guarantees every Nigerian the right to live and work freely anywhere in the country,” Atiku's post partly read.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has vehemently denounced a provocative post by Lagospedia on X (formerly Twitter) that called for the expulsion of Igbos from Lagos and the South-West region.
In a statement released late Thursday, August 1, Governor Sanwo-Olu's media aide, Gboyega Akosile, emphasized the governor's strong opposition to the inflammatory post, characterizing it as reckless, divisive, and dangerous rhetoric. Akosile reaffirmed that Lagos welcomes all Nigerian citizens, regardless of their ethnic background, and remains a beacon of inclusivity and harmony.
Governor Sanwo-Olu views the post not only as divisive and irresponsible but also as a deliberate attempt to sow discord between the Yoruba people of the South-West and other ethnic groups, particularly those who have made Lagos their permanent residence, Akosile added.
“The governor appeals to Lagosians not to allow any person or group of individuals to create tensions in the state, calling on the security agencies to promptly investigate those behind the handle and bring them to justice.
“Mr Governor enjoins Lagosians to ignore the post and any post of that nature, promising to double his efforts towards ensuring lasting peace in the state,” Akosile said.
