China Busts Snake Smuggler with 100 Live Reptiles

Chinese police detain a man who was trying to bring 100 live snakes into the nation.

Tourist caught smuggling 104 live snakes into China by hiding them in his pants. Non-native species discovered in six canvas bags, highlighting China's strict laws against animal trafficking.

An unidentified tourist was caught trying to sneak more than a hundred live snakes into China's mainland by hiding them in his pants.

According to a statement issued by Chinese customs officials on Tuesday, July 9, the tourist was stopped while attempting to cross the border into Shenzhen from Hong Kong.

A customs inspector discovered during the check that the passenger's pants were jam-packed with six tape-sealed canvas drawstring bags.

It went on, “When each bag was opened, live snakes of various sizes, shapes, and colors were revealed.” It was discovered that 104 snakes, many of which were non-native species and included milk and corn snakes, had been taken into custody.

Video footage revealed two border agents inspecting clear plastic bags containing a squirming mass of red, pink, and white snakes, their slithery bodies visible through the transparent bags.

China has recently stepped up efforts to stop the illegal wildlife trade, as it is a significant hub for animal trafficking.

Importing non-native species without the necessary permits is prohibited by the nation's strict legislation for biosecurity and disease management.

Due to the country's strict biosecurity and disease control laws, the importation of non-native species is heavily restricted and requires special permission, in order to protect the country's ecosystem and prevent the spread of diseases.
