Transfer: Mayor Urges Marseille to Avoid Signing Mason Greenwood
Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan urges the club not to sign Mason Greenwood due to his “unspeakable” past behavior, despite a reported £26.7m transfer agreement with Manchester United. Greenwood has been sidelined since January 2022 following allegations of rape and assault, which were later dropped.
Mason Greenwood of Manchester United has reportedly displayed “unspeakable” behaviour in the past, and the mayor of Marseille has ordered the team not to sign him. Marseille and Manchester United have completed a permanent transfer agreement for the 22-year-old, according to sources close to ESPN.
Mason Greenwood, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, has been sidelined since January 2022 when he was arrested and suspended by Manchester United due to allegations of rape and assault, which surfaced through social media posts and videos shared by a woman claiming to be a victim of physical violence.
The former England international faced charges of attempted rape, using coercive and controlling tactics, and assault resulting in actual bodily damage. However, the charges were later dropped.
“Hitting his wife ... I saw images that deeply shocked me. Massacring his wife in this way is unbecoming of a man, and he cannot have his place on this team.
“The values of OM and Marseille are anything but that in fact. It's a shame. I will ask [Marseille president] Pablo Longoria not to recruit Greenwood. I don't want my club to be covered with the shame of someone who hits his wife.”
Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan told French radio station RMC on Tuesday that Greenwood's actions were “unspeakable, unacceptable.”
ESPN has learned through sources that Marseille has agreed to pay Greenwood £26.7 million ($35 million), plus add-ons and a sizable sell-on clause.
Roberto De Zerbi, the manager of Marseille, stated at a press conference on Tuesday that he would not harbor any animosity toward Greenwood due to his past:
“Mason is a world-class player, but we have not recruited him yet. I don't know what happened, but I am not used to get involved in my players' private life. But if he comes here, you have to know that I treat all my players like my sons. I can tell them off in private, but I would never attack them in public.”
During his loan stint at Getafe last season, Greenwood impressed with a tally of eight goals and six assists, showcasing his attacking prowess and playmaking skills.
