Fuel Shortages Hit Nigeria Due to Logistics Disruptions — NMDPRA
Logistics Issues Cause Fuel Shortages, NMDPRA Reveals
Fuel shortages in Nigeria caused by logistics disruptions due to floods in Lagos and other regions, according to NMDPRA CEO Farouk Ahmed. Efforts underway to address issue, with 20-day supply of petroleum products available.
Farouk Ahmed, the chief executive officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), has attested to the fact that the country's current gasoline shortages were brought on by severe floods in Lagos and other regions, which disrupted logistics.
Following their meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with President Bola Tinubu, Ahmed revealed this to State House Correspondents.
He stated that truck loading and transportation were hampered by water in Lagos State. He claimed that this made the issue of PMS deficiency even worse, but he gave assurances that marketing companies and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) were working together to find solutions.
“And obviously offshore there were a lot of soil and there were destabilisation and it was very difficult to continue our shipping operations because of safety, the safe shift transfer was suspended because of the volatile nature of the high sea at the time, so that two days of delays created that gap and on top of that elsewhere there were floodings in Lagos and that disrupted truck loading and truck movement because of the floods so the floodings were now more like helpless.”
He noted that there is a 20-day supply of petroleum products, with 12 days offshore and 8 days onshore, while assuring the quality of petroleum goods and the government's commitment to assisting regional businesses.
“I did briefed the President we have like 20 days sufficiency, 12 days offshore and over eight days sufficiency of onshore but what is important is to translate the offshore to onshore and that is why I mentioned to you earlier that the movement of shipping to other parts of the country will fast track the onshore availability and once we have the stock in onshore spread across the country then you see a lot of comforts coming in,” Ahmed added.

The CEO also talked about how floods affect certain areas of Niger and Edo state, which he claimed causes more roadblocks and makes it more difficult to move petroleum products.
