Canada’s knockout hopes hit by injury blow before Switzerland clash. Davies Returns to Training as Canada Eye Round of 32...

Canada are sweating on injuries with a crucial World Cup clash against Switzerland coming up.

It’s been an emotional ride for the Canadian men’s team at the 2026 World Cup. They opened their account with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12, then smashed Qatar 6-0 on Thursday to put their fate in their own hands in Group B.

The win came at a heavy price for Canada.

Starting midfielder Ismael Kone fractured his leg against Qatar and is out for the rest of the tournament. Losing the 24-year-old hit the players and staff hard.

On Sunday, Canada’s vice-captain Stephen Eustáquio was absent from training in Vancouver. He wasn’t there when the session started, but was expected to return with the squad later that day.

Eustáquio has been Koné’s midfield partner and played every minute against Qatar. He also captained Canada in both World Cup games so far.

The 29-year-old LAFC midfielder showed no signs of injury during the match. Canada Soccer didn’t give a reason for his absence from training.

Captain Alphonso Davies sat out both games as he recovers from a hamstring issue, but he did take part in training. Coach Jesse Marsch said Davies will keep building up ahead of Wednesday’s must-win match vs Switzerland.

“We'll put him through a good training regimen this week and then evaluate how he fits in for Switzerland,” Marsch said of Davies, “but he's getting closer and closer to 100%, that's for sure.”

A win or draw against Switzerland would send Canada through to the Round of 32. They’re currently above the Swiss on goal difference: +6 for Canada, +3 for Switzerland.

Center-back Alfie Jones is likely to miss a third straight game on Wednesday as he continues recovering from an ankle injury.
