Iranian court sentences two robbers to death for ‘corruption on earth’, equivalent to ‘enmity against God’. Third offender gets 25 years in jail. Iran has second-highest execution rate globally, with at least 249 executions in 2024's first half.



Iran's judicial authorities announced on Wednesday, July 10, that two robbers have been sentenced to death for ‘corruption on earth’, a crime punishable by death in Iran and considered equivalent to ‘enmity against God’ under the country's legal system.


Two defendants have been sentenced to death by a court for committing armed robbery and spreading terror among the public, convicted of ‘Moharebeh’ or ‘enmity against God’.


A third offender was also sentenced to 25 years in jail for his involvement in the same heist.


The Supreme Court of Iran is the court to which all three of them may file an appeal of their sentencing. Human rights organizations like Amnesty International report that Iran is the country with the second-highest annual execution rate in the world, only exceeded by China.


According to Iran Human Rights, a Norwegian organization, at least 249 individuals—ten of them women—were put to death in Iran in the first half of 2024.
