The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has announced the rescue of 58 Nigerian women and children from human traffickers in Ghana. According to Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NIDCOM's spokesperson, the rescue operation was confirmed by Callistus Elozieuwa, chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana.
The breakdown of the rescued victims shows that 47 are from Kano, 5 from Katsina, 2 from Jigawa, and 4 from Kaduna. The suspected human traffickers have been arrested and handed over to security agencies for further investigation, profiling, and prosecution. This successful operation marks a significant milestone in the fight against human trafficking and exploitation of Nigerian citizens in Ghana.
The rescued women and children are currently en route to Nigeria, where they will receive support and care. Upon arrival, they will be profiled and counseled by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and reunited with their families. Their respective state governments will also provide rehabilitation services to help them reintegrate into society.
In a related development, eleven additional girls who were previously rescued have also been repatriated to Nigeria, bringing the total number of rescued victims to 105 in the past few months. This concerted effort demonstrates the commitment of the Nigerian government to combating human trafficking and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
