Sanusi Lamido, the 16th Emir of Kano, is reportedly occupying a palace at the Gidan Rumfa that has been set on fire by unknown assailants, burning other houses in the process.
The event reportedly occurred on Friday night at approximately 11 p.m., and it is reported to have taken place in one of the palaces in Kano State's Kofar Kudu neighborhood, where the Emir holds Monday court sessions.
According to a source, the palace's key was forced open, and it was believed that the intruder had broken in, started a fire, and then locked the door to cause the significant impact that also damaged the air conditioners, the throne, and other valuables within the palace.
The incident was reported by Dan Buram Kano, the Chief of Staff of the Emir, Munir Sanusi Bayero, in response. A statement conveyed his confirmation.
The statement said, in part, “On Saturday, 13th July, 2024 morning, a fire incident occurred at the outer court of His Highness's Palace, Kofar Kudu. Fortunately, there were no casualties, and the damage was minimal.
“The palace is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the palace and its occupants. We are also investigating the cause of the fire and taking steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.”
Saminu Yusif Abudullahi, the public relations officer for the Kano State Fire Service, stated that the command was unaware of the occurrence.
Recall that the rehabilitated Lamido Sanusi and the ousted Aminu Bayero have been engaged in a Kano Emirate struggle.
