Emir Sanusi's Palace Raided, Guards Sacked by Police
Police overthrow the local guards defending Sanusi and raid Kano Emir's palace.
Nigerian police take control of Kano Emir's palace, relieving local hunters of their security duties amid ongoing emirship dispute. The move comes after reports of federal officials planning to remove Emir Aminu Ado-Bayero, following a court ruling invalidating Lamido Sanusi's reappointment as emir.
The principal palace of the Emir of Kano, which was formerly under the protection of local hunters until Lamido Sanusi was reinstated, is now under the control of the Nigeria Police.
These hunters, referred to as "Yan Tauri" among the community, were assembled at the palace from all over the state. This security shift was a reaction to reports that during the continuing emirship dispute, federal officials planned to remove Aminu Ado-Bayero.
It was not possible to get in touch with the state's police spokeswoman for remarks on the circumstances that same evening. Nonetheless, a royal security source verified that the hunters had been relieved of their duties.
“Did you need me to tell you that they (hunters) are no longer here? You can see it yourself; everyone has found his way,” a police officer at the palace said.
As a result of a court decision invalidating Lamido Sanusi's reappointment as emir on Thursday, June 20, residents reportedly reported that the hunters left the palace between Saturday and Sunday morning.
“Some of them left behind their machetes to conceal their identity after they were asked to vacate the palace or face the wrath of the security agents,” one of the residents said.
