Daniel Ezra Leaves 'All American' Series Regular Role
Daniel Ezra Exits ‘All American’ Ahead of Season 7
Daniel Ezra exits 'All American' after six seasons, but will return as a guest star in Season 7. The June 24 episode marked a significant departure for the show, but Ezra's character Spencer James will continue to be an integral part of the franchise.
Spoiler Alert: The June 24 episode of “All American,” titled “Victory Lap,” marked a significant departure for the show. Daniel Ezra, the star of the series for six seasons, is stepping back from his regular role.
However, fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Ezra will still be involved with the franchise. The CW confirmed that he will appear as a guest star in Season 7, ensuring his character's legacy continues. Though his regular role is ending, Ezra will remain an “integral part” of the show.
This change marks a significant shift for the sports drama, which has followed Ezra's character, Spencer James, since its inception. As the show enters its seventh season, it will be interesting to see how the writers navigate this transition and incorporate Ezra's guest appearances.
The announcement follows the broadcast of Season 6's 13th episode, “Victory Lap,” on Monday night. In this episode, Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) achieves his dream of being drafted into the NFL, and a subsequent time jump reveals him excelling in the Super Bowl and proposing to Olivia (Samantha Logan). The remaining two episodes of Season 6 will focus on Spencer and Olivia's journey as they prepare for their wedding.
Daniel Ezra and showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll made the joint decision regarding his departure before the start of Season 6 production.
“After making the difficult decision to leave 'All American', my sole focus became completing the journey of the most life-affirming character I've ever played in the manner he deserves," Ezra said in a statement. "Thanks to Nkechi and the writers, I got my wish. Season 6 is 'Spencer's goodbye.' I'll miss him. I'll miss our cast and crew. I hope it's been as fun to watch him as it has been to play him.”
“Partnering with Daniel Ezra over the last six seasons to bring Spencer's story to life has been such an amazing, fulfilling, experience," Caroll said. "Daniel truly is a gift and brought so much to the character on and off the field. And while Spencer has achieved his NFL dreams, I'm grateful Daniel will still remain an important part of this family, both in front of and behind the camera as we step into a new, exciting chapter of ‘All American.”’
Daniel Ezra has been an integral part of “All American” since its inception, starring in the lead role since Season 1. Additionally, he has showcased his versatility by directing multiple episodes, including the milestone 100th episode, “100%,” which aired on May 27.
“All American” is a flagship series for The CW, boasting the highest viewership among the network's shows. Produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios, the show has enjoyed immense success under the guidance of executive producers Nkechi Okoro Carroll, Greg Berlanti, Jameal Turner, Sarah Schechter, Mike Herro, and David Strauss.
