Ecuador secured a spot in the Copa America quarterfinals with a 0-0 draw against Mexico, finishing second in Group B and setting up a showdown with reigning champions Argentina. Mexico, meanwhile, was eliminated from the competition after finishing third in the group, with Ecuador advancing thanks to a superior goal differential.
In a tense match, Mexico pushed hard for a win in the closing minutes, and their efforts almost paid off when Felix Torres was awarded a penalty in extra time for an apparent foul on Guillermo Martinez. However, the decision was overturned after a VAR review showed Torres had made contact with the ball, and the penalty was rescinded.
“Whenever an objective is not meant, there is certain discomfort and doubts, that's only natural, no matter who's here,” said Mexico manager Jaime Lozano following his side's. elimination.
“But the players kept believing until the very end, that's not easy.
“That decision [about my future] is not up to me.”
