A train disaster in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal has left eight persons dead and roughly twenty-five injured.
On Monday morning, in the vicinity of New Jalpaiguri, a stationary passenger train, the Kanchenjungha Express, was struck by a cargo train.
A single express train wagon was seen hanging in midair in dramatic video captured from the scene of the collision.
Authorities say a thorough investigation will take place, even though it's unclear what caused the crash.
Ambulances and disaster teams, according to the authorities, have been dispatched to the scene to aid with the rescue efforts.
Railway officer Sabyasachi De told reporters, “We are trying to complete the rescue operation as soon as possible.”
“The preliminary information we have is that the Kanchenjungha Express was hit from the rear by a goods train,” he stated, adding that an investigation will be necessary to confirm the cause.
Relief teams were coordinating closely with railroad officials to conduct rescue operations, according to Federal Railway the incident, the railroads have established a control desk with a helpline number.
“The injured are being shifted to the hospital. Senior officials have reached the site,” he posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Following the incident, a control desk with a helpline number has been set up near Rangapani station to assist affected individuals and provide support.
In a tragic incident last year, a triple train collision in Odisha's eastern state resulted in a staggering 290 fatalities and over 1,000 injuries, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.
