Finidi George Reveals Why He Quit as Super Eagles Coach
Why I left my position as coach of the Super Eagles - Finidi
Finidi George resigns as Super Eagles coach due to NFF's hiring of foreign technical adviser. Despite confidence in his abilities, Finidi steps down after just two months, citing the change as a deal breaker. He expresses gratitude for the opportunity and wishes the team well.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) hiring of a foreign technical adviser is the reason given by former Super Eagles head coach Finidi George for his resignation.
The Eagleonline obtained a copy of Finidi's resignation letter, which includes details on his willingness to continue even after the team's lackluster performance in his first official games.
He conveyed confidence in his abilities to turn the Eagles around despite their dire circumstances stemming from a losing qualifying campaign.
A disappointing 2-1 loss to Benin in Abidjan crushed hopes for a swift recovery and made the Super Eagles' precarious situation in Group C—they have only three points after four games—even more worse.
“While the recent qualifying results haven't been ideal,” Finidi wrote, “I remained committed to guiding our World Cup qualification campaign back on course.”
However the NFF didn't seem to think Finidi could get the team qualified for the World Cup, as seen by their choice to name a foreign technical adviser.
Finidi was just two months into his contract when this move turned out to be a deal breaker.
“Given the recent changes to the technical crew,” Finidi said. “I believe it's time for me to step aside.”
Finidi acknowledged that his time there was brief but that he was grateful for the chance.
“I am writing to inform you of my decision to step down as head coach of the Super Eagles. This decision is made in light of the recent changes to the team's technical staff. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the entire NFF leadership, the sports ministry, and the Nigerian people for the chance to serve as the Super Eagles' head coach. Please be assured of my unwavering support for the team, and I wish us all the best in the future,” he wrote.
A distinguished athlete in his own right, Finidi was a member of the renowned “Golden Generation” that captured hearts during Nigeria's 1994 FIFA World Cup debut and won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He played in both the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, earning 62 caps for Nigeria. He has gold, silver, and bronze medals from the AFCON competitions in 1992, 1994, 2000, and 2002 in his trophy cabinet.
Finidi is among the extremely select few Nigerian athletes who have won the trophy from the UEFA Champions League.
Before taking over as head coach of the national side, Finidi was the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) manager of Enyimba International, which he won the league in his second season.
