Russia and Vietnam to Deepen Diplomatic Ties, Putin Says
Putin promises to strengthen diplomatic relations with Vietnam
Putin meets with Vietnamese President, pledges to strengthen diplomatic ties and strategic alliance, amid US criticism over Ukraine conflict.
After meeting in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, the presidents of Russia and Vietnam have stated that they wish to strengthen their relationship.
In addition to congratulating Vladimir Putin on his recent reelection, Vietnamese President To Lam was all praise for his Russian colleague.
Russia's top priority, according to Putin in response, is to fortify its strategic alliance with the nation of Southeast Asia.
Following a sumptuous visit to North Korea, his journey to Vietnam is seen as an indication of the continued diplomatic support Russia still has in the area.
President Lam greeted Putin with a red carpet reception and stated, “Congratulations to our comrade for receiving overwhelming support during the recent presidential election, underlining the confidence of the Russian people.”
The visit has drawn criticism from the US for providing President Putin with a stage on which to further his aggressive conflict in Ukraine.
Vietnam strives to strengthen its relationships with Europe and the United States while also cherishing its historical ties with Russia.
Vietnam has deep links to Russia that date back many decades to the 1950s, when the Soviet Union provided crucial military, economic, and diplomatic backing to the newly established communist state in North Vietnam.
Their connection is “filled with gratitude and loyalty," according to Vietnam. Vietnam was isolated, ostracized by China and the West, and highly dependent on Soviet support following its invasion of Cambodia in 1978 to overthrow the brutal Khmer Rouge rule.
