Euro 2024: Slovenia Denied First Euros Win as Serbia Fights Back
Late Jovic Header Earns Serbia Point in Euro 2024 Clash
Serbia salvages draw against Slovenia with Luka Jovic's dramatic 95th-minute goal, keeping Euro 2024 hopes alive.
Serbia secured a dramatic last-minute tie against Slovenia at Euro 2024, thanks to Luka Jovic's goal in the 95th minute. With 20 minutes remaining, Slovenia was on the verge of winning their first Euros match when Zan Karnicnik scored from close range, putting Serbia in a difficult position. However, Jovic, a former Real Madrid striker, saved the day with a header from a corner, flicked near-post, giving Serbia a thrilling draw in Munich.
A draw benefits England, as they will advance as Group C winners if they defeat Denmark later on Thursday. Serbia's manager, Dragan Stojkovic, criticized his team for showing England "too much respect" in their opening Euro 2024 match, despite a similarly poor start in Munich. Unlike the match against England, there was little improvement after the interval until Timi Elsnik's cross was finished by Karnicnik, who arrived late at the far post.
Slovenia appeared certain to win only their second major tournament match (the first being against Algeria in the 2010 World Cup) and move closer to reaching the elimination stages for the first time. However, Jovic's goal means both teams still have everything to play for heading into their final group games on Tuesday at 20:00 BST, when Serbia faces Denmark and Slovenia faces England.
Žan Karničnik named UEFA Player of the Match in Slovenia vs Serbia Clash.
