Iweala warns Nigerians, “Depart from using my name and image to fight political battles.”

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala warns Nigerians against using her name and image for political battles, refutes fake social media post criticizing Bola Tinubu's economic policies. Okonjo-Iweala reaffirms commitment to global economic stewardship and vows to combat exploitation of her reputation for political purposes.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, has issued a warning against the improper use of her name and likeness in political disputes.

This warning follows a Facebook post claiming that Okonjo-Iweala chastised the Bola Tinubu administration's economic policies, pointing out that the national debt had reportedly increased to N24 trillion in just two months, even after the gasoline subsidy was removed.

“I call several times to help and advise but the current administration and cabals refuse to let me come in. How can you remove fuel subsidies with a debt of 24 trillion in 2 months,” the post claimed, attributing Okonjo-Iweala.

On Monday, June 23, Okonjo-Iweala, however, cautioned against using her name and image for political warfare on social media and asked people to cease ascribeing false messages to her in a post on her official X feed.

In addition to stressing her commitment to fighting the exploitation of her reputation for political purposes within Nigeria, Okonjo-Iweala reaffirmed her commitment to global economic stewardship.

The Director-General of the WTO wrote, “THIS IS IMPORTANT- It appears that there are people in Nigeria trying to use my name and image on social media to fight battles on different sides of the political divide, putting words in my mouth that I never said.

“Therefore, I want to alert everyone that the message below is FAKE. This is a stern warning to all those trying to misuse my name for their political ends that I will continue to rebut any attempts to use my name and image falsely!”
