Labour Suspends Strike for 5 Days Amid Minimum Wage Talks
Organized labour suspends strike over minimum wage for 5 days
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called off their five-day strike as part of Organized Labour.
On Tuesday, June 4, an NLC leader announced this in Abuja.
It is anticipated that the unions will release a statement soon after starting talks with the administration.
The Federal Government announced President Bola Tinubu's resolve to raising the minimum wage offer over N60,000 after hours of negotiations with the Abuja leadership of organized labour.
According to the agreement, “The President of Nigeria, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, is committed to establishing a National Minimum Wage higher than N60,000; and the Tripartite Committee will convene daily for the next week to finalize an agreeable National Minimum Wage.”
Recall that the NLC had already declared that, notwithstanding the agreement reached with the federal government during the emergency meeting on Monday, June 3, the current nationwide strike has not ended.
The NLC revealed in an X post on Tuesday, June 4, that the labor strike that has paralyzed the country's economy will persist until Tuesday, when the union's organs meet and all of the resolutions from Monday's meeting are anticipated to be reviewed.
“Until we hear from our organs at our meeting scheduled for today, June 4, we are still on strike,” the post read.
