The Arterial Road N20, which runs from Northern Parkway to the Outer Northern Expressway, or ONEX, in Abuja, has been officially named after Nigeria's most famous literacy figure, Professor Wole Soyinka, by President Bola Tinubu.
The Professor Wole Soyinka Highway was the name of the road.
This follows a suggestion from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), which was made public on Tuesday, June 4, by Bayo Onanuga, Special Assistant to the President on Information and Strategy.
The name change is in remembrance of Soyinka, the renowned author, poet, and playwright who will turn 90 in July.
President Tinubu stated: “Professor Wole Soyinka has brought immense honour and fame to Nigeria through his unparalleled contributions to literature and his unwavering commitment to human rights and social justice.
“Naming this highway after him is a fitting tribute to a man who has dedicated his life to the pursuit of truth, freedom, and artistic excellence.”
President Tinubu emphasized his outstanding literary accomplishments and his part in boosting Nigeria's stature in the world of culture.
Remarkably, Soyinka was the first African recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature.
