South China Floods: Heavy Rain Causes Catastrophic Flooding and Landslides in Guangdong Province, Leaving 47 Dead and Many Missing, with Widespread Damage and Disruption.
State media claimed on Friday, June 21, that heavy rain in the Guangdong province of southern China had caused catastrophic flooding and landslides, with at least 47 reported deaths.
In addition to the nine deaths already known to have occurred in the same city, it was verified on Friday, June 21 that 38 of the fatalities were associated with Meizhou city alone.
Nine individuals have died and six are missing in Guangdong province's rural areas as a result of the heavy rains.
Officials in other parts of the nation have also issued warnings about possible floods.
The Meixian district of Meizhou city, Guangdong, saw four deaths and four missing persons on Thursday, June 20.
Furthermore, Jiaoling County, which is also in Meizhou, has lost five residents.
Homes and trees toppled as a result of the worst rainfall, which fell between Sunday, June 16 and Tuesday, June 18.
During the downpour, a road leading to Meixian district gave way entirely. The Songyuan River, which passes through Meizhou, saw the worst flood ever recorded.
1.06 billion yuan ($146 million) in Meixian district and 3.65 billion yuan ($502 million) in Jiaoling county are the estimated amounts of direct economic damage.
The National Meteorological Center has issued warnings for many southern provinces and particular places in the north due to the harsh weather and heavy rain that is predicted to affect other parts of the country during the next 24 hours.
Heavy rains caused landslides and flooding in the southern regions of Guangxi and Fujian last week.
A terrible student death occurred in Guangxi after they fell into a swollen river as a result of the downpour.
