Bleaching Lotion Alert: Popular Product Recalled in Europe
Public is informed by NAFDAC about a popular bleaching lotion recall in Europe.
The European Union's Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products, or RAPEX, has recalled Caro White Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion. This information was made public by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, or NAFDAC.
The product's high concentration of Kojic Acid, which exceeds the permitted maximum concentration of one percent as established by the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, SCCS, is the reason for this action, which is motivated by the product's noncompliance with the Cosmetic Products Regulation.
The higher concentration of kojic acid prompts worries about possible endocrine-disrupting effects associated with its use.
Caro White skin-lightening cream typically costs N8000 in Nigeria.
The NAFDAC encourages importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to use the product with caution and vigilance even though it isn't mentioned in the database.
Prior to usage, NAFDAC advises thoroughly verifying the product's authenticity and evaluating its physical state.
The Agency urges consumers and medical professionals to notify the closest NAFDAC office as soon as they become aware of any adverse events related to the product.
Reports can be sent via email to pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng, using the Med-safety application, or via the E-reporting platforms available at www.nafdac.gov.ng.
Following examination, five UK retailers discovered in July 2023 that Caro White Intensive Care Lightening Beauty Cream, which was marketed on eBay, presented a serious chemical risk to customers.
It was found that the cream included 422 mg/kg (0.042 percent w/w) of clobetasol propionate, an ingredient that is not allowed in cosmetics.
In addition, although not mentioned on the label, hydroquinone—another illegal ingredient—was found in the package. The product also lacked the appropriate markings and labeling.
eBay swiftly took appropriate action in response to the dangerous discovery, which made the listing disappear from its online marketplace.
The goods' owners were strongly encouraged to stop using them right away.
