“I'll keep contesting for presidency as long as I'm healthy,” says Atiku

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar declares that as long as he is healthy, he will “keep contesting” for the presidency of Nigeria.

He made this statement in an interview with Voice of America's Hausa service in Abuja.

77-year-old Abubakar led the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its standard-bearer, In the 2023 election.

By the time of the next presidential election in 2027, the politician will be eighty-one years old.

Abubakar has made six attempts to win the presidency, although he has also appeared on the ballot three times and in 2023 as a presidential candidate. 2007–2019

The fact that previous US President Abraham Lincoln did not receive the presidential vote on his first try, according to Abubakar, gives him comfort.

“Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy,” Abubakar said.

He also discussed the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) current dilemma, emphasizing that in order for the party to win the 2027 presidential election, it must remain cohesive and form partnerships with other political organizations.

“Even the former US President Abraham Lincoln contested seven times before finally winning,” he said.

“However, given the current state of the PDP, it is clear that a single- handed effort will not suffice to win the election. Strong support and collaboration with other parties are required.”

Abubakar announced last week that he was in talks with Peter Obi, the Labour Party's (LP) presidential candidate for 2023, over the potential for a merger.
