Residents Warn pro- Wike Lawmakers Of Impeachment Threat
REACTIONS have been made to the latest threats by 26 MPs who support Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Over the weekend, parliamentarians who support Mike Pence declared that if Fubara continued to be accused of consistently violating important constitutional principles, they would not think twice about impeaching him.
They said that the state has now been operating outside of both state and constitutional rules, even though they acknowledged that the prior attempt to remove the governor from office was put on hold as a result of the peace deal with President Bola Tinubu.
Remember that since the parliamentarians' unsuccessful effort to impeach the governor on October 30, 2023, Wike and Fubara have been embroiled in a festering political conflict.
Following a recent statement by the state's People Democratic Party (PDP), Presidential Campaign Committee Council, and other notable citizens, which blamed Wike for the growing crisis in the state and called on President Tinubu to caution him (Wike), pro-Wike lawmakers, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, began to make fresh threats of impeachment.
However, in response to the impeachment threat yesterday, a citizen named Odikamme Udokamna advised the lawmakers not to try to use their “legislative rascality” to cause more unrest in the state by taking Fubara's and the people of Rivers for granted.
He said, “It is on record that this band of opportunists are unhappy with Siminalayi Fubara's stoic statecraft in effectively managing the affairs of the state pragmatically, in the face of a flurry of unprovoked and unwarranted attacks, purposely designed to distract him from focusing on the discharge of his enormous responsibilities as the state chief executive.
“It is bizarre to learn from these folks that their understanding of legislative functions is to make laws that ostensibly suit their whims and caprices, and not the ones that will accelerate the growth, development and progress of Rivers State and her people.”
Political analyst Oounabo Inko-Tariah, a former Senior Special Assistant on Media to former Governor Nyesom Wike, reacted by saying that it was regrettable that the Assembly had abandoned all rationality and cooperation that had been expected of them since President Tinubu brokered the peace.
He lamented the fact that, in contrast to the governor, they tended to become political critics determined to upset the balance of progress rather than demonstrating a similar sense of reconciliation and dedication to peace.
According to Inko-Tariah, “Their grandstanding has become completely nauseating not just to democratic ethos, but to Rivers people who are solidly behind Governor Siminalayi Fubara by their organic support.”
He stated that, in contrast to Wike, Fubara respected peace, which is why the legislators were enjoying the tranquility in the state.
