Oxford University to award Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala an honorary recognition
Honorary degrees will be awarded to six individuals, including World Trade Organization (WTO) director-general Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, according to the University of Oxford.
The 2024 honorary degree winners were revealed by the university on X on Wednesday.
Oxford University announced, “This year, six people will receive honorary degrees.”

The university lists Michael Palin, Demis Hassabis, Anoushka Shankar, Salim Yusuf, Warren East, and Demis Hassabis as other honorees.
The degrees will be given out at the June 19 Encaenia event, according to the college.
The University of Oxford honors its donors and grants honorary degrees to deserving men and women each year during the Encaenia event.
The seventh director general of the WTO is Okonjo-Iweala, an economist from Nigeria.
As the first African woman to run the World Trade Organization (WTO), Okonjo-Iweala made history when she took over as its director in 2021.
She worked with the World Bank for 25 years until being named managing director of operations in 2007.
In addition, Okonjo-Iweala made history by being Nigeria's first female finance minister, a position she held for seven years across two terms, from 2003 to 2015. In addition, in 2006, she temporarily held the position of first female foreign affairs minister.
In 2019, Okonjo-Iweala became an international honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, joining a long list of accolades.
She co-chairs the Global Commission on the Economics of Water and is currently a member of the World Economic Forum's board of trustees.
