Israel-Iran War: Nigeria Joins G7 To Call For Ceasefire And Condemns Drone And Missile Attacks
Nigeria joins the G7 to call for a ceasefire in the Israel-Iran war and condemns drone and missile attacks.
Nigeria and its international counterparts have called on Israel and Iran to show moderation in the face of rising tensions.
In an incident that occurred late on Saturday, over 300 drones and missiles were fired towards Israel, resulting in at least 12 injuries.
The bulk of the surface-to-surface missile launches were intercepted before they entered Israeli land, according to the Israeli military, which recognized dozens of such launches.
The incident was confirmed early on Sunday that a drone and missile attack against Israel was taking place, with Iran's Revolutionary Guards claiming that it was a reprisal for a fatal drone hit on its Damascus consulate on April 1.
The attack occurred while Gaza was under siege due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
Countries all throughout the world denounced Iran's attacks on Israel and issued warnings that they would cause more instability in the Middle East.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Francisca Omayuli, signed a statement on behalf of Nigeria stating that diplomatic measures were being made to defuse the situation and avert a wider confrontation in the Middle East.
Omayuli suggested that in order to improve international peace and security, both countries should take into account the worldwide commitment to peaceful conflict resolution.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria joins other Members of the International Community to call on Iran and Israel to exercise restraint, as diplomatic efforts are ongoing to ease tension and avoid a wider conflict in the Middle East.
“In this critical period, it behooves the two countries to reflect on the universal commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts, for the advancement of global peace and security,” the statement read.
The attack by Iran was condemned by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as a significant escalation.
“I am deeply alarmed about the very real danger of a devastating region-wide escalation,” he added, calling on parties to “avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East.”
Ursula Leyen, the president of the European Commission, urged Iran to immediately stop its strikes, stating that all parties involved now needed to abstain from further escalation and focus on reestablishing stability in the area.
The G7 affirmed its unwavering commitment to Israel's security as well as its solidarity and support for its people.
The G7, which consists of the US, Japan, Germany, France, UK, Italy, and Canada, also declared on Sunday that they would intensify their efforts to resolve the situation.
“We demand that Iran and its proxies cease their attacks, and we stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilising initiatives,” it said.
Beijing also urged moderation, condemning the strike as the most recent extension of the Gaza conflict and urging the application of a recent resolution passed by the UN Security Council that calls for an end to hostilities.
US President Joe Biden met urgently with top security officials and pledged unwavering support for Israel.
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak denounced the careless strikes, claiming they run the risk of escalating hostilities and destabilizing the area.
He urged people to remain composed and mentioned that Britain will be collaborating with its partners to defuse the issue.
“China calls on the international community, especially countries with influence, to play a constructive role for the peace and stability of the region," it added.
According to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ottawa vehemently denounces Iran's aerial assaults.
“We stand with Israel," it added.
Russia called on all parties to exercise caution and voiced grave concern over the most recent dangerous escalation in the area.
