FCCPC Reopens Chinese Supermarket Sealed Over Discrimination
Chinese supermarket in Abuja that was closed due to discriminatory policies gets reopened by FCCPC.
The proprietor of the Chinese store in Abuja, Liu Bei, has addressed the accusations made against her in front of a tribunal at the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). The supermarket was recently sealed on claims of discriminatory tactics.
On Wednesday, April 24, Liu Bei showed up to the commission's headquarters in Asokoro, Abuja, escorted by members of her family and estate officials, to present her defense against the charges of prejudice against Nigerian clients.
The FCCPC's measures came after the supermarket was sealed on Monday and a summons and threat of punishment was issued.
The first report, which was released on Sunday, focused on a rule that only allowed Chinese nationals admission, sparking outrage and worries about unfair treatment.
Liu Bei responded to the accusations by claiming that her store catered to everyone who came into the office building—residents, employees, and guests—regardless of their nationality.
Sanusi Shuaibu, the estate assistant facility manager, verified that the problems had been fixed after the commission meeting.
He clarified that the owner of the supermarket and representatives from the commission discussed the matter and turned in the necessary paperwork at the meeting.
The issue was resolved after discussions and exchange of questions.
The FCCPC representatives opened the food store after confirming the details given and inspecting the establishment's merchandise.
Liu Bei has returned to run her business, and the supermarket is now operational.
An FCCPC representative also attested to the supermarket owner's attendance at the meeting, stating that enforcement officials then departed the location; however, particulars regarding whether the store opened unsealed were withheld.
