100,000 Migrants Expected To Arrive In Thailand From Myanmar

ON Tuesday, April 9, Thailand's Foreign Minister, Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara, declared that in light of the ongoing crisis near the border town, the country is prepared to host up to 100,000 refugees from Myanmar.

Thailand borders Myanmar, which has been experiencing civil upheaval since a military coup in 2021, for a distance of 2,400 kilometers (1,490-miles).

There have been reports of violent skirmishes close to Myawaddy town, which is near the Thai town of Mae Sot. People have started arriving at the border in search of safety even though there hasn't been a large-scale evacuation.

The Thai-Myanmar border is still open for business, according to Foreign Minister Parnpree, even if trade has decreased by 30% over the last year as a result of the fighting.

Myawaddy is an important land crossing for Myanmar; in the past year, $1.1 billion worth of products have passed through.

Concerning the deteriorating scenario, Thai officials and Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin spoke earlier on Tuesday about the border situation.

Thailand approved the Myanmar junta's request to permit three special aircraft for the purpose of repatriation.

Furthermore, since the 1980s, Thailand has permitted tens of thousands of refugees from Myanmar to reside in makeshift communities close to the border.
