Man Jailed For Seven Months Over Stealing Bag With Olympics Security Plans
According to a judicial source, a man was sentenced to seven months in prison for stealing a bag that contained Olympic security plans from a Paris town hall employee on Saturday.
The man, who was born in 2001, showed up in court in the French capital on Friday following the theft that occurred on Monday night from a train at the Gare du Nord station.
An engineer from Paris City Hall owned the bag, which he had stored in the overhead compartment.
Concerns were raised about the crime when a police source revealed that the bag included two USB keys and a computer that were loaded with security plans for the Paris Olympics.
The USB key “contained only notes about road transport in Paris during the Olympics, and not sensitive security information,” according to a later statement from the Paris prosecutor's office.
This judicial source stated that the suspect was “already known” to police for thefts on public transportation, especially in the early part of January.
The defendant was on trial not only for the theft as a repeat offender but also for refusing to give authorities his phone code.
A spokesman for Paris city hall said that an investigation will be conducted to determine whether the city employee's carrying of the USB key while traveling violated any internal security regulations.
From July 26 to August 11, approximately 35,000 security personnel—including about 2,000 capital municipal police officers—are anticipated to be on duty every day for the Olympics.
Police will be extremely vigilant for potential terror plots in addition to controlling crowds and stopping street crime, since Islamist extremists have targeted France for the past ten years.
The dates of the Paralympics are set for August 28–September 8.
