International Women's Day: FG Is Gearing Up For The New Minimum Wage — George Akume

FG Getting ready for the new minimum wage—things are about to change says Akume

According to George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), the government is getting ready to declare a new minimum wage for public employees.

Akume launched a new presidential initiative for women's empowerment on Thursday while giving a speech in Abuja.

The SGF celebrated the yearly International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8 at the event, in honor of President Bola Tinubu.

Akume applauded the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development's efforts to advance gender equality in the nation.

According to the SGF, Muslims and Christians ought to offer prayers for the nation and the president during the Lenten season and the upcoming Ramadan.

He said: “Ours is a complex federation, where the three tiers of government all have access to federation account and so we if we work together, we can do more for our people.

“Things will begin to change as more compressed natural gas (CNG) buses make their way to the country and as we prepare for a new minimum wage.”

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) staged a nationwide demonstration against the current state of economic hardship on Tuesday of last week.

The president of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, claimed that the federal government had broken agreements made with organized labor.

The agreement included raising the minimum wage, implementing a cash transfer program, and providing compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles as alternatives to gasoline-powered vehicles.

The federal government announced in August 2023 that it would spend N100 billion between then and March 2024 to buy 3,000 20-seater CNG-powered buses.

December saw the addition of N130 billion to the budget for electric cars and CNG conversion.

However, not much has been reported on the project in the interim.

The national assembly must give its consent before the federal government can spend N100 billion designated for CNG buses, according to a ruling made last month by the Senate Committee on Gas.

The committee's statement followed its request for information on the project's cash disbursement from Minister of Finance Wale Edun.

A new minimum wage would be discussed with labour unions, according to a statement released by the federal government in March.

The NLC had previously called for a new national minimum wage of N794,000 for workers in the south-west zone.

N1 million is Ajaero proposal.
