Emefiele Trial: Witness Confirms Forgery In $6.2m Fraud Case [VIDEO]
A forensic analyst has confirmed that the document used to request payment of $6.2 million to foreign election observers was forged, adding another twist to the trial of former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele.
The forged documents used to request payment of $6.2 million for foreign election observers in 2023 have been brought to the attention of the Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja.
This was revealed on Thursday by forensic analyst Bamaiyi Meriga during her testimony as a witness in Godwin Emefiele's (former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria) trial.
Emefiele faces charges ranging from obtaining $6.2 million under false pretenses to corrupt advantages, conspiracy, breach of trust, and forgery.
A forensic analyst verified the forgery of a document used to seek $6.2 million for foreign election observers during the most recent hearing.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) called witness Bamaiyi Meriga, who testified that forensic analysis had shown unmistakable proof of signature forgery and differences in the execution seal from the original.
The forensic analyst went on to explain that the documents were not signed by the former President Muhammadu Buhari or the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.
Two documents were admitted as evidence by Justice Muazu, one of which was a presidential directive regarding foreign observers.
Meriga clarified his employment status during cross-examination, claiming he was paid by the Nigeria Immigration Service and wasn't an employee of the EFCC.

Matthew Burkaa, Emefiele's attorney, chastised the witness's behaviour in the meantime, accusing her of dodging questions.
Rotimi Oyedepo, the prosecution's attorney, refuted the defense attorney's assertions in response.
The trial is scheduled to resume on March 11 for further proceedings.
