African Games: Nigeria Secures Its 97th Medal As Ese Brume Wins Gold
Ese Brume took home the gold medal in the women's long jump competition, at the 13th African Games in Ghana.
The 28-year-old won her second straight African Games championship on Thursday after clearing 6.92 meters on her first try at the University of Ghana in Accra.
In the most recent edition, which took place in Rabat, Morocco, in 2019, she also triumphed.
Silver went to Koala Jasmine of Burkina Faso, while bronze went to Prestina Ochonogor, who made her international debut with a leap of 6.62 meters.
Amaechi Obiageri defeated her countrywoman Onyekwere Chioma to win the gold medal in the women's discus throw with a throw of 58.93 meters.
With a throw of 58.03 meters, Onyekwere, the reigning champion and African record holder, had to settle for second place; Nora Monie of Cameroon got bronze.
In the women's heptathlon, Francis-Petererson Kemi took home the silver medal after scoring 5268 points in all seven events. She finished behind the Benin Republic's Ahouanwanou Odile.
With 97 medals from the 2018 African Games, Team Nigeria is still ranked second in the medal standings.
37 gold, 25 silver, and 35 bronze medals have been won by Nigeria's delegation in Ghana.
