Three Medical Students from Abia State University Died in Traffic Accident


Yesterday, while on their way back to the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, they were killed in a traffic accident.



On Thursday, March 21, three Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) medical and surgical students were returning from an induction ceremony when they were killed in a tragic vehicle accident.


The vehicle they were in lost control and somersaulted along the Okigwe-Umuahia Road, resulting in the disaster.


They had been there at their colleagues' 30th induction ceremony.


Three of the six occupants were pronounced dead at the site, while the other two were hurt and are being treated in a hospital.


Witnesses reported that the car was seriously damaged and that personal items were scattered all over the crash scene.


Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived on the site quickly to handle the issue in the meanwhile.


Abasifreke Okon and Irene Edwin, two National Diploma (ND 2) students studying Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), were en route to collect materials for their practical exams when the mishap transpired.


The accident, which was caused by erroneous overtaking, claimed the life of the biker who was transporting them.


Mathew Olonisaye, the State Sector Commander of the FRSC, conveyed his sorrow over the occurrence and encouraged drivers to follow safety protocols to the letter.


The school has suspended ongoing examinations to mourn the departed students, extending condolences to their families and the school community.


The students are:

1) Dr Favour Okpanku (500L)


2) Dr Felix Okorie (400L)


3) Dr Theophilus Ojike (500L)
