The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako, has reopened the trial of Mister Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

In 2021, the federal government charged Mister Kanu with terrorism and treasonable felonies on 15 amended counts.

He was extradited from Kenya and charged in July 2021.

Judge Murtala-Nyako, the trial judge, dismissed eight of the fifteen counts after making a decision regarding Mr. Kanu's attorney's preliminary objection, which questioned the validity of the charges.

As part of his preliminary objection, Mister Kanu had recently contested the trial court's ruling and asked for the complete charge to be dismissed. But of the fifteen counts against him, the court has upheld seven of them.

The Federal Government committed an error by extrapolating Mister Kanu to Nigeria, according to the court of appeals, which dismissed the charges against him.

The Court of Appeal's ruling had been overturned by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court ruled that the charges and the trial could not be declared void due to the Federal Government's actions.
