NLC Reportedly Issues FG New Ultimatum And Suspends Nationwide Protest

The Nigeria Labour Congress Tuesday evening suspended the two-day strike it called to protest worsening hardship in the country.

The two-day nationwide protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was put on hold on Tuesday night.

The Labour stated in a press release following the National Executive Council meeting that the protest's first day's goals had been met.

“Consequently, NEC-in-session resolved as follows: to suspend street action for the second day of the Protest having achieved overwhelming success thus attained the key objectives of the 2-day protest on the first day,” the communique partly read.

On Monday, February 26, 2024, the Presidency invited labor leaders to a last-minute meeting. However, the meeting ended in a deadlock because the NLC insisted that the protest would go forward.

Following this, the NLC suspended economic activity nationwide on Tuesday. Labor leader Joe Ajaero stated that the protest was about hunger rather than merely calling for a review of the minimum wage.

“You have to understand it. This protest is about hunger. What of those who are not working? The minimum wage, when will it be completed? When will it be implemented? What will be the minimum wage that will remove hunger?” Ajaero queried.

“However, Nationwide action continues tomorrow with simultaneous Press Conferences across all the states of the federation by the state Councils of the Congress including the National Headquarters.

To reiterate and extend the seven-day ultimatum, which now expires on March 13, 2024, by an additional seven days, during which the government must execute all of the previous agreement from October 2, 2023, as well as the additional demands we made in our letter during today's nationwide protest.

“To meet and decide on further lines of action if on the expiration of the 14 days Government refuses to comply with the demands as contained in the ultimatum, Ajaero stated
